Benefits of Fluid Film Bearings
Fluid film bearings require a fluid, usually oil, water, or air, to be used as a lubricant between the bearing and the shaft. The fluid is pressurized via either a pump for hydrostatic bearings or via the high speed of the journal pulling in the fluid for hydrodynamic bearings. At Milwaukee Bearing & Machining, we have produced babbitt bearings for years and can help ensure that you receive high-quality bearings that will last for years.
There are several benefits to using fluid film bearings instead of ball bearings. The main benefit is the two surfaces never touch which reduces friction. The lack of friction between the two parts allow for less wear and a longer lifetime for the bearing. If properly maintained, the bearing can even last for decades. Due to the lower friction, fluid film bearings also provide more stability and less vibrations in the equipment, which can lead to less repairs on the other components as well. Babbitt bearings in particular provide a superior wetting surface for the bearing.
The babbitt material is generally a soft alloy used for just the surface of the bearing. The babbitt material is applied as a thin layer on a much stronger material such as steel, bronze, iron and aluminum. We can process all bearing shell materials in our modern machining facility. All babbitt lined bearings are ultrasound tested to assure 100% bond of the babbitt to the backing or shell material. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified to ensure high quality workmanship.
We have state-of-the-art machines for centrifugally casting babbitt lined bearings up to 48" diameter. Contact us today to learn more about how we can provide the best bearings for you at affordable prices!
